Gym grades in Font: what colours and levels in bouldering gyms mean

Many bouldering gyms grade with their own colours or levels instead of the Font scale. There is no standard for this, and a step only means something in its own gym. Some gyms do publish how their steps convert to Font, though. Those tables are collected here, exactly as the gyms state them, with the source and the day we last checked. So far most of them are in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Click a Font value to open it in the grade converter.

Gyms that grade in Font directly

Nothing to convert here, the Font grade is on the boulder.

  • boulderbar (Vienna, St. Pölten): The grade is on the start tag, based on Fb from 3 to 8B, plus a question mark for boulders with unusual moves. Source
  • Einstein Boulderhalle (Recklinghausen): Seven colours, and the Fb grade is also on the boulder. Source

Own scale, but no conversion

These gyms grade on a scale of their own, and we could not find a conversion to Font on their website. Then a level stays what it is: a ladder within that one gym.

  • 7aplus (Potsdam): Colours. A conversion to Fb hangs in the gym, we have not recorded it yet.
  • Flashh (Hamburg): Colours on triangle cards.
  • Nordwandhalle (Hamburg): Eight colours from yellow to white.
  • urban apes (several sites): Levels, no official conversion.
  • Südbloc (Berlin): Six grades and a joker colour.
  • DAV Kletter- und Boulderzentrum Thalkirchen (Munich): Levels 1 to 9.
  • Studio Bloc (Darmstadt, Mannheim, Wiesbaden): Levels 1 to 7, roughly 3a to 8a overall, with no values per level.
  • Einstein Boulderhalle (Ulm): Nine steps in numbers.
  • Mandala (Dresden): Eight difficulty grades.
  • YOYO (Heidenau): Numbers 1 to 7 with colours.
  • Boulderia (Neunkirchen am Brand): Seven colours.
  • Stuntwerk (several sites): Levels 1 to 8 on coloured triangles.
  • Kletterzentrum Innsbruck (Innsbruck): Numbers 1 to 6, plus training boulders 7 to 9.

Is your gym missing?

If your gym posts a conversion, or you have a table for another scale at hand, send it to me at stephan@climbersdelight.de. A photo is fine. And if something here is out of date because a gym has changed its system, I would be glad to hear that too.
